Egg Drop

Before getting started, make sure to have your guardian’s permission, be respectful of nature, and remember safety first!

Grade Level:  This project is geared towards middle school and high school students, and is also a great project to do as a family to include younger students.

Deadline: September 19th

Objective :  Space programs, such as NASA, have used a capsule and parachutes model to return astronauts from space.  This technology was used to return the astronauts after first landing on the moon in 1969 (Apollo 11), and it is still being used today.  Your mission is to create a lander that can safely return three EGGNAUTS from space (or from a fall of about 25 ft above ground).

Rules:

  1. Landers will need to be dropped off at the Pavilion in downtown Washington on September 19 between 9 and 11 am.

  2. You must register prior to September 19. (Please note, you do not have to attach a pic/video on the form.)

  3. Due to social distancing orders, the STEM Fest committee will be dropping the landers, and recording the drop.

  4. Lander must be able to hold 3 eggs, which will be provided and loaded by a STEM Fest committee member.

  5. Lander cannot weigh more than 5 pounds.

  6. Lander should contain at least one parachute.

  7. Landers will not be returned.

Project Submission:

  1. Your lander will need to be dropped off on Saturday, September 19th at the Pavilion on Main Street in Washington, PA between 9 am and 11 am.

  2. The STEM Fest Committee will video the egg drop for everyone to view on Saturday, September 26th during our STEM Fest Finale.

  3. Consider naming your lander so your family and friends can recognize your masterpiece.  With the submission of your lander, you are giving What About STEAM, LLC the right to use it for nonprofit purposes, including use in print, on the internet and all other forms of social media.

Thank you for participating in this activity.  We can't wait to see your creation.

By submitting your project, you will be entered into a drawing to win a participation prize.
